Hurricanes win the Canadian National Jamboree
On Wednesday, August 17th the MSW Hurricanes coached by Wayne
Gray-Baker and Dave Clark ventured off to Vaughan, Ontario to
compete in the Canadian National Jamboree representing Ontario
as #3 seed. After their tremendous come back at the Ontario
Provincial Grand Championships, the team took on the task at
hand.
Wednesday to Friday comprised of 6 round robin games with the
9th place team to get knocked out. The Hurricanes started off a
bit shaky with a 2-2 record for both Wednesday and Thursday
losing to both BC’s Delta Heat and Guelph Gators. The team
regrouped late Thursday in the round robin and didn’t look back
after that. On Saturday, the Hurricanes managed to seed 4th in
the elimination round with a record of 4 wins and 2 losses
giving them a 2 life advantage over the bottom 4. Saturday’s
challenge was against the #1 seed BC’s Delta Heat. Heat scored 2
runs in the 1st inning with the Hurricanes managing to catch up
with 1 run in the 4th and 1 in the 5th causing the game to go
into an International Tie Breaker. The Hurricanes focused and
determined, beat the Heat with a win of 3-2. The winner now
guaranteed to win a medal.
Sunday’s challenge was against the #2 team, BC’s White Rock
Renegade who had home team advantage. A well rounded, well
coached, hard hitting team and solid defense. The Hurricanes
pumped and ready to go came out firing in
the 1st with 5 runs to rattle the Renegades as the winner of
this game would proceed to the Gold medal game. The Hurricanes
solid pitching and defense held off the Renegades with only
allowing one run to score. The Hurricanes came
back with two more runs for a final 7-1 win.
The Renegades went on to lose out in the Semi finals to the
Ontario Provincial Champions the Guelph Gators which too ended
in an International Tie Breaker. With long delays due to
weather, and spending 14 – 15 hours per day at the park
the Hurricanes again stepped out for their final challenger the
Guelph Gators. The team knew that their last 3 games against the
Gators resulted in a loss to them. Still determined and with
home team advantage the Hurricanes prevailed.
Hurricanes tremendous pitching managed to shut down the first 3
Gator batters in the 1st and allow their team to step up and
come out one more time with fire and “Rock’m like a HURRICANE”
to take a commanding 5‐0 lead in the first
inning. The Hurricanes managed to hold off the Gators up until
the 5th when the Gators 3rd baseman caught a high, inside pitch
and sent one screaming over the fence to score 1. The Gators
only managed to score one more run to make the final score of
7-2 and the Hurricanes to clinch the Canadian National title.
